If someone has firmly decided that the Bible is untrue and full of errors and discrepancies, convincing them otherwise becomes exceptionally difficult. There is little we can do to help them. Even if we adequately respond to a few supposed contradictions, opponents of the Bible have amassed a seemingly endless supply of apparent discrepancies. What is most unsettling to this writer is that Satan may gain victory over a child of God overwhelmed with a myriad of assumed inconsistencies. Thus, I have determined to begin this additional section in our weekly bulletin – Answering The Atheist.
Not long ago, I was contacted by a young man who was discouraged. Some “friends” had given him a list of 30 or so Bible contradictions. His faith was important to him, but he struggled to answer the list of discrepancies. He sought my help to do so. I gave a written response for each of the supposed contradictions, demonstrating that there was, in fact, no contradiction. Whether he shared it with his friends or not, I do not know.
That was the catalyst for the “Answering The Atheist” project. It is my prayer that it will help to affirm and reaffirm the perfect unity of God’s word in the minds of believers and that it will enable us to defend the Scriptures against Bible antagonists. And perhaps, by the grace and mercy of God, those who resist the truth might be silenced and come to glorify God.
Many lists of “Bible contradictions” are available on the internet. Specifically, someone pointed me to the extensive list of supposed discrepancies at the Skeptic’s Annotated Bible. In our next article, we will begin addressing and answering the material there and elsewhere online. Contact us if you encounter an apparent contradiction you would like addressed.
