IS THAT REALLY WHAT IT MEANS?

The Bible emphasizes the need for unity and peace among God’s people. We can find texts in both the Old (Psalm 133:1; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; 1 Chronicles 12:17) and New Testament (John 17:21-23; Romans 12:16; 1 Corinthians 1:10; Ephesians 4:1-6) that tell us to pursue unity. Several years ago, I taught an eight lesson series on the topic—there is that much material and more in the Bible about unity.

Occasionally in the discussion of unity among God’s people, you will hear folks reference a short, but powerful verse in Amos. It reads:

Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? (Amos 3:3)

What is Genuine Christian Fellowship and Why it Matters

For most religious folks, the word “fellowship” brings to mind thoughts of game nights, potlucks, donuts and coffee, etc.. For most religious folks, the word “fellowship” brings to mind thoughts of game nights, potlucks, donuts & coffee, etc..

Church socials are prominent in most denominational groups as a way to entertain the saved and attract the lost. Some churches of Christ have also made social activities a major part of their focus, calling it “fellowship.” Surfing the internet this past week, I was disappointed (though not surprised) to see many church of Christ web sites promoting potluck Sundays, emphasizing the donuts & coffee in their foyer, etc. One site advertised a free soccer clinic for the community which their “church soccer team” will host in mid-August.

Fellowship is a widely used term in religious circles. Unfortunately, it is often misused and misunderstood. Many, when they speak of fellowship refer to potluck meals, game nights, birthday parties, baking contests, sports events and the like. But are these things fellowship? Yes, in the secular sense of the word, but our concern should be ‘what is biblical fellowship’?
