Who is “Us” in the Creation story? | Answering the Atheist

Answering the Atheist, creation

Inquiry:

Who created heaven and earth? Was it God alone in creation (Genesis 1:1; isaiah 44:24) or was it God and Jesus (John 1:6-10; 1 Corinthians 8:5)? Is there a contradiction?

Response:

The question posed shows a misunderstanding of the nature and person of God. The Bible reveals three persons, all who are God, who were involved in the creation. The context of two of the verses supplied by the questioner will show the unified effort by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in creation.

First, in Genesis 1:1-2, we are told that “God created the heaven and the earth” and that the Spirit of God “was hovering over the face of the waters” Who is mentioned in verse 1? Is it the Father? Or might it be the Son? The answer is yes – both. Later in the creation account, as man was about to be created, we read a conversation that God had. It reads,

Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness… (Genesis 1:26)

This verse makes it obvious that there was more than one person of the Godhead active in creation.

Also, consider John 1:1-2. It tells us that Jesus was God (a divine being) and with God (the Father) in the beginning. Jesus shares the nature of being God with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

To ask if it was God alone or if it was God and Jesus who were involved in the creation is an erroneous question. The Scriptures teach that Jesus is God (John 1:1; 10:30; 20:28;  Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:1-2; etc.).

There is no contradiction.
